Not gonna lie。 This was almost a DNF in the first 20%。 I mean, I was just NOT invested and it moved very slowly。However, I like the author and the series and decided to plod through it。 At 40%, I was finally in!Eventually, the story starts to come together in a very interesting and suspenseful way - and the reason behind everything is much bigger than expected! While not my favorite in the series, it ended up being pretty good。

I have truly enjoyed the Kay Scarlett series from the beginning but this one was just not up to the first novels in many areas。 Character's comments about far right wing extremists and Russia and Chinese collusion are totally nonsensical。 Hope thr next Kay Scarpetta book will just tell a great story without political rhetoric。 I have truly enjoyed the Kay Scarlett series from the beginning but this one was just not up to the first novels in many areas。 Character's comments about far right wing extremists and Russia and Chinese collusion are totally nonsensical。 Hope thr next Kay Scarpetta book will just tell a great story without political rhetoric。 。。。more

I listened to the audio book of Unnatural Death。 I really liked the narrator, she made the characters come alive。 The story was very good, and I think one of my favorite of the Kay Scarpetta series。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Watch out for the surprise return of Carrie Grethren! We thought she was dead and no longer a threat to Scarpetta! Is Cornwell going to continue in this vein? I would (almost) die to know!

Thank you @GrandCentralPub for my gifted copy。 My thoughts are my own。This is book 27 in the wonderful Kay Scarpetta medical thiller series。 If you love thrillers, then you definitely need to check this series out。 Though each book can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend you start with book 1 (POSTMORTEM) and work your way through this chilling series。In UNNATURAL DEATH, all of the regular Scarpetta characters return, including Dr。 Kay Scarpetta, Benton Wesley, Pete Marino and Lucy Farinelli 。 Thank you @GrandCentralPub for my gifted copy。 My thoughts are my own。This is book 27 in the wonderful Kay Scarpetta medical thiller series。 If you love thrillers, then you definitely need to check this series out。 Though each book can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend you start with book 1 (POSTMORTEM) and work your way through this chilling series。In UNNATURAL DEATH, all of the regular Scarpetta characters return, including Dr。 Kay Scarpetta, Benton Wesley, Pete Marino and Lucy Farinelli 。 Each character is well-developed and the characters have a long and intricate history。 The storyline is intriguing。 The action moves quickly, and ultimately reaches a satisfying conclusion。The case is strange。 Dr。 Scarpetta is whisked off on a top-secret mission with the FBI。 Two bodies have been discovered mauled in an out of reach location。 Pete Marino is already on the scene and he is excited about discovering a huge footprint that he is convinced belongs to Bigfoot! Kay must deal with uncooperative media, jealous co-workers, strange deaths and more。Read this if you enjoy:Books in a series

I do NOT BELIEVE Patricia Cornwall actually wrote this book。 I mean it。 Two things scream this to me: First, it is riddled with a British-ism, “I’ve not” or “ He’s not” rather than the American phrasing “I haven’t” or “He hasn’t。” But that’s not the most obvious and frankly annoying part: It is FULL of very unprofessional connections of unrelated sentences separated by a comma followed by “and。” Cromwell is far too skilled a writer to do this… not to mention doing it ad nauseum。 I’ve read plenty I do NOT BELIEVE Patricia Cornwall actually wrote this book。 I mean it。 Two things scream this to me: First, it is riddled with a British-ism, “I’ve not” or “ He’s not” rather than the American phrasing “I haven’t” or “He hasn’t。” But that’s not the most obvious and frankly annoying part: It is FULL of very unprofessional connections of unrelated sentences separated by a comma followed by “and。” Cromwell is far too skilled a writer to do this… not to mention doing it ad nauseum。 I’ve read plenty of her works, and neither of these “stylistic” phenomena characterize anything I can remember。 。。。more

This was an enjoyable crime fiction thriller。 I struggled a bit getting into it at first because I had no context of the characters since I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series。 Given the snippets of backstory, there's clearly a lot of history I missed out on and while you can absolutely read this as a standalone, I'm not sure that kicking it off with #27 in the series was the best idea。 I also misread the plot。 I felt like we were gearing up with a huge, complicated plot leading This was an enjoyable crime fiction thriller。 I struggled a bit getting into it at first because I had no context of the characters since I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series。 Given the snippets of backstory, there's clearly a lot of history I missed out on and while you can absolutely read this as a standalone, I'm not sure that kicking it off with #27 in the series was the best idea。 I also misread the plot。 I felt like we were gearing up with a huge, complicated plot leading up to a conflict with one particular character, so when the book ended with a less than thrilling climax, I was genuinely in a "that's the end!?" moment。 There had to be more, right?? Wrong。 Obviously I don't read enough series to know that's basically how it works--Cornwell has opened Pandora's box here and can probably write 4-5 more books alone off of revelations revealed in this one。 I don't think I'm engaged enough to read them, but I'm sure fans were thrilled with this one and what's to come in the series。 。。。more

finally backPatricia Cornwell’s books were becoming so formulaic。 This one is back to how her writing used to be。 I enjoyed this one very much。 I hope you will as well。

Same problem I’ve had with the last few in the series。 100 pages in and all that has happened is they took a helicopter ride。 So slow to start。 Used to like when she would explain the forensics and all of the things that Cornwell is an expert in。 Now it seems like there is so much focus in the books on AI and computers and technology。 It just doesn’t feel like her true specialty anymore。 And you lose some of what made the character great。 Also, I’m just being picky, but we have a forensic anthro Same problem I’ve had with the last few in the series。 100 pages in and all that has happened is they took a helicopter ride。 So slow to start。 Used to like when she would explain the forensics and all of the things that Cornwell is an expert in。 Now it seems like there is so much focus in the books on AI and computers and technology。 It just doesn’t feel like her true specialty anymore。 And you lose some of what made the character great。 Also, I’m just being picky, but we have a forensic anthropologist who doesn’t believe in evolution? my husband lived off Braddock Road for 25 years, people in that area do not stop and get out of their cars and act in awe every time they see a big helicopter。 They are so used to it。 They are desensitized and pay it no attention。 This didn’t feel true in the book。 Also, Lucy and Benton are supposed to be these brilliant minds and yet they also make the stupidest most dangerous choices so she can wrap the book up in 24 hours every time。 I don’t like that new style I keep telling myself I’m gonna stop reading this series。 I have to just call it quits。 。。。more

Startling revelations about some earlier assumptions in the series and harrowing demonstrations involving new technology make this a really exciting read, but one difficult to describe without giving too much away。

Cornwell (almost) always leaves me wanting more。 The forensic stuff is always fascinating。 What I most appreciate about the storyline in this novel is that she incorporates how some American citizens have become the pawns of people whose mission is to destroy democracy。I shared several highlights that I made in the Kindle edition。 Here's one: "Driving around in trucks with gun racks and Confederate flags, these homegrown folks call themselves the real patriots。 The true Americans。 All the while Cornwell (almost) always leaves me wanting more。 The forensic stuff is always fascinating。 What I most appreciate about the storyline in this novel is that she incorporates how some American citizens have become the pawns of people whose mission is to destroy democracy。I shared several highlights that I made in the Kindle edition。 Here's one: "Driving around in trucks with gun racks and Confederate flags, these homegrown folks call themselves the real patriots。 The true Americans。 All the while they’re doing the bidding of the Russians and other enemy nations。" 。。。more

What fun to have a few hours with an old group of acquaintances! That is what listening to the audio version of this mystery felt like。 If that type of mystery excites you, you will have as much fun with this book as I did。

okay, it appears everyone loved this novel except for me。 I was so disappointed and bored with all of the detailed technical descriptions of the equipment being used by the victims, by the ME and staff, by the investigators, by Lucy, by Benton and all his top secret spy leaders, etc -- the story, such as it was, had potential for a lot more drama, but instead there was deadly slow inching movement。 There was very little action。I have read all of the Scarpetta novels, and lately have been less th okay, it appears everyone loved this novel except for me。 I was so disappointed and bored with all of the detailed technical descriptions of the equipment being used by the victims, by the ME and staff, by the investigators, by Lucy, by Benton and all his top secret spy leaders, etc -- the story, such as it was, had potential for a lot more drama, but instead there was deadly slow inching movement。 There was very little action。I have read all of the Scarpetta novels, and lately have been less than delighted with the read -- this book, I could not wait for it to be over。 Ledger might have been an interesting character, and his mother, and Agent Mullet, and Jonas -- it just felt so spotty, entire storylines like this one with the stepfather on the tractor, were brought up enough to raise your interest and then thrown away。I also found the resolution to be kind of slapdash。 Who knows, maybe I was in a bad mood when I read this。 。。。more

Another Great Book!I look forward to reading every current book by Patricia Cornwell。 She brings every character to life, and it seems as though they are real people。 And the scary stuff she wrote about in this book, seems relevant to the world today。 Please, please keep writing, Patricia Cornwell! I love every book you write!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I don’t think I’ve ever rated a Scarpetta book so low (maybe Red Mist, because let’s be fair, that’s the whole hot mess that began the downfall of the entire series!), but If I could do 2。5 stars I would。 There was so much to not like about this book。 It feels like Cornwell has snorted her early and beloved style of writing to become a technology chasing junkie and cryptic conversation narrator that builds characters and relationships that no longer even feel realistic。 I used to love these char I don’t think I’ve ever rated a Scarpetta book so low (maybe Red Mist, because let’s be fair, that’s the whole hot mess that began the downfall of the entire series!), but If I could do 2。5 stars I would。 There was so much to not like about this book。 It feels like Cornwell has snorted her early and beloved style of writing to become a technology chasing junkie and cryptic conversation narrator that builds characters and relationships that no longer even feel realistic。 I used to love these characters, I used to love the plots, the theme of a medical examiner partaking in risky and thrilling work to resolve crime and solve mysteries but that feels like a distant past dream that no longer comes to fruition。 We buy each new book, hope on our fingertips with each turn of the page that her style will return and the characters and plots we once loved will emerge but I reach the end and am horribly disappointed again and again。 The fact that Kay continues to live with a man who lies repeatedly to her and decides for her what is and is not in her best interest and even tricks her into meetings and sharing information is beyond comprehension! That she works along a colleague who once attempted to sexually assaulted her。 That this entire book takes place in ONE day。 That she tries to equally play a fierce heroine and pitiful victim simultaneously all the time。 I no longer see her as this amazing tough and independent woman who runs a medical examiner system for an entire state… she’s just Be tons lackey and a puppet for anyone that comes along in each new book, and that includes Lucy, her sister and returning villains from the past。 She used to have boundaries and strong backbone。 Now she does not。 Least but irritating none the less are the slight integrated political and COVID and societal references making their appearances with increasing regularity in each new book。 I used to read her books to escape the real world problems and enter the world of Kay, Marino, Lucy Benton and all the other characters in each book。 Now I’m beginning to dread it because it feels the same as mine。 Lastly, the dialogue between characters is so weird, so disjointed, and so odd at times that I question how these people could possibly maintain a real relationship! Who talks to each other in cryptic and stilted phrases with no direction。 It’s so odd! No love is felt, no passion, nothing to draw me in any longer。 the idea of the drones was cool, the mystery of how something came down a wooded path so stealthily to avoid cameras was intriguing, and finding the microchip were the most interesting parts, and the only lingering hints of the old Cornwell。 The rest was drivel of useless description and repeated info from the last book。 I may finally be done and out this series to rest like so many before me have already done。 。。。more

This is the 27th book from the Kay Scarpetta series。This book was a lot better than her last 3-to 4 books in the series。 The characters weren't as loathsome as they had gotten to be over the past few books。 Granted, there wasn't much of a story but this is certainly a step in the right direction for Cornwell。This is a day in the life of Kay Scarpetta and those she hangs out with in Alexandria, Virginia as the coroner。 The regulars make their appearances: Lucy, Marino, Dorothy, and Weston。 It is This is the 27th book from the Kay Scarpetta series。This book was a lot better than her last 3-to 4 books in the series。 The characters weren't as loathsome as they had gotten to be over the past few books。 Granted, there wasn't much of a story but this is certainly a step in the right direction for Cornwell。This is a day in the life of Kay Scarpetta and those she hangs out with in Alexandria, Virginia as the coroner。 The regulars make their appearances: Lucy, Marino, Dorothy, and Weston。 It is hard to believe over 400 pages could be written about one day in anyone's life, but Cornwell manages to do so with Kay Scarpetta。 Sometimes it seems like every little detail is covered by 3-4 pages。The focus, which is non-existent with Cornwell, is the savage death of 2 people in the deep forest outside of Alexandria。 Who were the victims? Why were they killed? Those questions are allegedly what this book is about。 They are ignored by Cornwell until the very end of the book where they are rushed through to achieve completion。It is fun to have the story take place in Alexandria where I live。 It is easy to picture the scene since I have been there many times。 Much better than the past few books but still a page-churning mediocre story。 。。。more

I stopped reading the Scarpetta novels because Morino became such an annoying character。 This book is back on track: surprising, thrilling, and enjoyable。 I learned things in this book about Russia and China's current warfare, exoskeletons, swarms of mini drones, IA, and surprises withheld in past books。 I enjoyed all of the characters and Bigfoot making an appearance。 I stopped reading the Scarpetta novels because Morino became such an annoying character。 This book is back on track: surprising, thrilling, and enjoyable。 I learned things in this book about Russia and China's current warfare, exoskeletons, swarms of mini drones, IA, and surprises withheld in past books。 I enjoyed all of the characters and Bigfoot making an appearance。 。。。more

I read these Scarpetta novels because the storylines are always great。 However just once I’d like to see Cornwell write one where Kay wasn’t treated like a child, and sheltered from everything by everyone!!! I hate that the key character in all these books is weak。 And I wanna smack Lucy upside her head!!
